Along the Netherlands’ southern coast, sediment-rich rivers have built a sprawling delta of islands and waterways between coastal dunes. After catastrophic 1953 tides, the Dutch constructed an extensive system of dikes, dams, locks, canals and bridges to protect the region from the North Sea.
